Hill Repeats - Costco Hill, Folsom, CA

The graceful curve of "Costco Hill" awaits your attack.
Hill repeats are an excellent way to build climbing power. Depending on the size and the length of the hill, you can also use the hill to help with interval training.  Yes, climbing the same hill over and over again can be incredibly boring.  But if you need to get a ride in while staying close to home (stuff going on with the kids, unsettled weather conditions, etc) repeats are the best way to build strength.

This is the view of "Costco Hill" as you climb.
 Start Location?
Iron Point Rd – Starting at Iron Point and Serpa Way.
End Location?
U-turn at Iron Point and Carpenter Hill Rd.

Distance?
About 0.7 miles up.

Why This Hill?
It is long without being too long, steep without being too steep.  Good for all skill levels.

Grrranimals?
To the best of my knowledge, I have never seen a squirrel, deer, mountain lion, or bear.  Kinda strange because Folsom is surrounded by the critters (okay, maybe not the bear…).

Prepare to descend and make sure your brakes are ready.
How do you climb it?
I will typically choose a pace that is 70-80% max heart rate.  When you are about 30 seconds from the top, pick up the pace and finish strong.  Pat on the back if you can carry the power through to the small descent before the u-turn.

Dangers?
While a lot of cars use this road, it is pretty wide with a good bike lane.  The main thing to lookout for is your downhill speed when going back for another serving.  That stoplight at Serpa Way will get you if you let your speed get away.

How many times?
Between 6 to 8 times is enough to do the trick.  If not, give me a call, I need to train with you.

Be sure to take in the view before starting your first ascent. Too often I forget to pause every once in a while and savor the moments that cycling affords.

Do you have any hills that you think would be a good challenge for me in the Folsom, EDH, Auburn area?  Post your suggestions in the comments below and I will give as many as I can a try! Keep checking back to see my reviews of your hills.
